Weekly Collections

First Fruits Part 1 of 5

Dear Donors,

Our collections have been down over the past two weeks! It is understandable given the difficult economic times, loss of the 49ers, unfavorable weather, Christmas season just ended, etc. However, looking at the bright side, we are all still here, no major disaster has befallen us and we continue to visit the church. It is important for us to continue and maintain our historic church, as this is our spiritual home, a place of hope and faith as we connect with God in His place of worship.

In this light, I am requesting our donors to please continue being generous with your weekly offerings. If you can avail of our Online Giving, even better! This saves us money, time and paper and you can arrange your donation regularly. Remember, even if you are on vacation, the church’s bills do not stop.

A suggestion is to give “First Fruits.” What does it mean to give “First Fruits”? It means making an offering to God of the first and best portion of all we receive. We do this both as a sign of our love and in thanksgiving for all the many blessings we have received.

We give in proportion to what we have received. This means we give from our substance and not from our surplus. Giving from our substance requires a sacrifice and leads to con- version of mind and heart.

“Honor the Lord with your substance and with the first fruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.” (Proverbs 3:9-10)

Please continue to give and give regularly! If you haven’t been giving regularly, this is a good time to start. Thank you for your generosity and continued support!

First Fruits Part 2 of 5

This is the second installment of our “First Fruit” series. What does it mean to give “First Fruits?” It means placing God first in our lives.

This means making God’s priorities our priorities. When we place our loving Creator at the center of our life, we become more prayerful, more focused on loving and caring for our families and our neighbor in need. We are also less preoccupied with material things.

In short, we find the true source of happiness and fulfillment that we all seek and that the Lord alone can provide. It has been said that “people make the time and find the money for what they value most.”

We must challenge each other, as disciples of Jesus Christ, to value God above all else. This belief will lead us to put our faith in action by finding the time and money to promote God’s priorities because we have made them our priorities as well.
As mentioned last week, please continue to give and give regularly! If you have not been giving regularly, this is a good time to start. Thank you for your generosity and continued support!

2012 AAA Kickoff

The start of Lent is just a few days away and we are about to kickoff our 2012 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal Campaign. Donation forms will be available at all Masses and you will have the opportunity to make a one-time donation, or the first payment of a year-long pledge, the choice is yours. You can also do your AAA donation online. (Remember to choose the Annual Appeal as the purpose.) For the last several years, we have fallen woefully short of meeting our assessment from the Archdiocese. Please prayerfully consider making a generous donation to this year’s appeal.

Choir Auditions

Auditions for the St. Patrick Schola Cantorum, a new mixed choral group that will serve as St. Patrick’s main music ministry, will be held in February. The Schola will perform every Sunday for the 12:15 p.m. Mass, as well as for liturgical feast days such as Easter and Christmas, and occasionally for special devotions and feasts.
Liturgical music is a specialized ministry, which requires not only basic music-reading skills, listening skills and performing skills, but also a deep respect for the liturgy (i.e. the Mass), a willingness to grow in spiritual faith, leadership skills, and the ability to collaborate as a team. Even though this is a volunteer, non-paid position, it requires commitment, perseverance, and a sense of responsibility and self-initiative to participate successfully in the music ministry. Cooperation with the Music Coordinator and other music ministers is a must.

Time Commitment

  • Weekly rehearsals will be held on Thursdays from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. (this may increase, especially before Easter and Christmas)
  • Sundays, 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. (warm-up at 11:30 a.m., Mass at 12:15 p.m.)

Audition Dates

All auditions will be held in St. Patrick’s McKenna Hall from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and will last to 5-10 minutes per person:

  • Tuesday, February 21, 2012
  • Thursday, February 23, 2012
  • Tuesday, February 28, 2012

What to Bring to Your Audition

  • A completed application form
  • A song/musical piece to perform (memorized or read, any style sacred or secular, accompanied or a capella) – if you would like to be accompanied, please bring sheet music for the pianist to read from or bring your own accompanist
  • Songs/ hymns will be provided if you do not have any to prepare

After February 28, ongoing auditions will be held 30 minutes before rehearsals. The first official Schola Cantorum rehearsal will be on Thursday, March 1, 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in McKenna Hall.
Please pick up an application from the parish office during normal business hours. Thank you for your interest!

Music Coordinator,
