Veterans Lunch by SPYCO

On January 14, 2012, the St. Patrick Community sponsored a luncheon for our veterans, their wives and friends under the auspices of SPYCO, our youth organization. They were very pleased and grateful for being honored with such appreciation. As you know these veterans of WWII, the Korean and Vietnam Wars are surviving on low income. Many are only receiving SSI government support which is not a large sum of money; many veterans have died, but we have a still a substantial number of them in our community. Every year we organize a luncheon and distribute gifts to them. It is our way of showing appreciation for their sacrifices in serving our country. My gratitude goes to Hersie Rosales and the SPYCO officers and members, along with some helpful parishioners and donors who contributed their time, treasure and presence. January 17, 2012 was the onset of “Forward In Faith”... a two-semester, 20-week program sponsored by the Archdiocese of San Francisco. It is an educational enrichment program for the thinking catholic. Participants gather weekly from 7:00 – 8:30 in locations throughout the Archdiocese. The second semester will run from September 4th – November 6th and will focus on Sacraments as actions of the Church, and on the Christian moral life. This is an opportunity for the participants to deepen their knowledge and share their lived faith experiences and discuss issues that confront the contemporary Catholics.

Superior Court Judge
Upholds Transfer Tax Case Ruling
in Favor of Archdiocese

(January 9, 2012) SAN FRANCISCO At a January 9, 2012 hearing Superior Court Judge Richard Kramer made final the Tentative Statement of Decision against the City of San Francisco that he issued on November 18, 2011. In a fight to preserve the freedom of religious organizations to restructure, the Archdiocese of San Francisco challenged an attempt by San Francisco Assessor-Recorder Phil Ting, to impose a 20 million dollar transfer tax bill on an internal reorganization involving Archdiocesan parish and school properties.

This struggle lasted more than three and a half years. Jack Hammel, General Counsel for the Archdiocese, made the following comments in response to Judge Kramer’s decision: “As I have previously stated, The family of Archdiocesan civil law corporations has simply been reorganized to better enshrine the centuries old principles of church law concerning the uniqueness of parishes and schools. The courts in recent years have said that if you claim that your parishes and schools are unique under church law, then show it in your corporate structures and related articles and by-laws. We have done that. Each corporation is a spoke in the Archdiocesan wheel and the ecclesiastical office of the Archbishop is the essential ‘hub’ of the wheel. Intra-church transfers within a wheel of this nature are not subject to transfer tax. It is as simple as that.”

Hammel added, “This has been a very frustrating experience. From the outset, Mr. Ting and his chief assistant in the Recorder’s office, Craig Dziedzic, refused to recognize well- established law on this subject. This refusal and the repeated delaying tactics that we encountered over the past three and a half years, caused a considerable disruption to the charitable activities of the Archdiocese.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development

For over 43.6 million Americans, there is a thin line: between eviction and home, between hunger and health, between unemployment and work, between anxiety and stability. This line is the Poverty Line. For a family of four, that line is $21,834 a year.  The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty by funding community programs that encourage independence. You are essential to its success. Your generous donations will give those in poverty the support they need to make lasting changes. Together, we can make a difference in families and communities. Please donate prayerfully and generously to today’s Special Collection. Thank you.

Thank You

We are extremely grateful to all of you for your generous response to World Mission Sunday.  If for some reason you missed this, there is still time.  It is never too late to help those in the Mission world. You can still donate online or fill out an envelope and place it in your parish collection or mail it directly to: Propagation of the Faith One Peter Yorke Way San Francisco, CA 94109
