Get to Know Fr. Spyrow

I am currently the Vicar for Clergy for the Archdiocese. I am responsible for overseeing the clergy in all facets of priestly life—assignments, continuing education, retirements, sabbaticals. This is my full-time assignment. I am very happy to be appointed Pastor here at St. Patrick’s. This is a part-time assignment. I want to meet as many parishioners and parish families as possible (don’t be afraid to introduce yourself); involve the children in the life of the parish in roles such as altar servers; and/or lectors, greeters, and Eucharistic Ministers once they are confirmed; initiate new ministries; review the parish’s Synod questionnaire responses (2020) with the Parish Council to see what we can learn, and to use the input I want to hear your suggestions and your vision for the parish. Feel free to share with me.

My twin brother and I were born in Concord, California and are the youngest of 5 boys. I attended Catholic school from elementary school through college attending De La Salle High School in Concord, St. Mary’s College of California in Moraga and Saint Patrick Seminary and University in Menlo Park. I have a strong Lasallian spiritual foundation. My parents were married for 72 and a half years. My father was Greek Orthodox and my mother was Mormon when they first got married. My mother was baptized Catholic after my third brother was born and my father made a profession of faith. They felt it important to raise 5 boys in the Catholic faith.

At age 13, I began working in a local Concord funeral home becoming a licensed funeral director later. When not working as a funeral director, I worked as a Director of Religious Education at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, did retreat work, and was also Director of Student Activities and Campus Minister at the De La Salle Christian Brothers San Joaquin High School in Fresno for 2 years. I also worked for Wells Fargo Bank.

Moving back to San Francisco, I was at a decision point— stay in the funeral business or listen even more closely to the call I had been hearing all my life. I listened to that call which led me to discern a vocation at St. Patrick Seminary in 2007. Since ordination in 2014, I have served as Pastor at St. Raphael’s in San Rafael, served as Administrator at other parishes, Vicar for Clergy, and now assigned as Pastor here. When I have time I like to fish for trout and Dungeness crab. I also enjoy cooking when time allows.

Welcome Father Spyrow, we are glad you are here!

And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age."
